Building A Deck

Many Australians love the outdoors so having a nice relaxing space to enjoy at home is a must and what better way to start than with adding a deck. It is a great way for owners planning to sell to increase not only the floorspace of their home but the value of the home as well.

There is a lot to consider when planning to build a deck. The team at Auscape Exterior Transformations will be able to help you along the way to get the best result to suit your needs, but here’s a few pointers of things you will want to consider getting started.

The Purpose and Function

To get the most out of your new deck, aim for a design that reflects your interests and activities. These spaces are very versatile so its good to think about what you enjoy and how you will make it happen in that space. Take some time to consider its location. In some cases, this is very simple to assess, in other cases where you have a few options, you will need to spend a bi more time considering its functionality with regards to its proximity to other parts of the home, the view or landscape around the area and most importantly, how much sunlight or shade the are will give you at different times of the day over the seasons.

Once you have an idea of what you want to achieve, get in touch with us and we should be able to give you a guide to the cost and you will be able to see if this will be achievable with your budget.

What is your Budget?

Your budget will determine the size, design, and materials that you will choose for your deck. You will also want to make sure you add in components like designing and applications to council for approval if it is required.  As well as the deck itself, you may want to consider additional components like railing if its needed, flowerboxes, built-in seating, shelter or lighting.

Will You Need Approval From Council

In NSW, installing balconies, decks, patios, pergolas, terraces, and verandas may not require approval if the proposal meets the relevant development standards set out in the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008 (the State Policy). You can find more information about the standards HERE.

There are added costs that will come from going through the design and approval process so this may potentially influence your plans and how you will want to design your deck. In the instance that you do require an approval, our team will be able to help you with the design and preparation work to get things started.

Know Your Materials

When building a deck, you may want to consider the look you wish to achieve, maintenance needs, how it will work with you surroundings and your budget. The most common options are:

Treated Pine

This is usually the most affordable option. The timber is treated to withstand Termites, fungi and decay so long as its maintained. It is versatile and can be stained or painted in any colour. It will need yearly maintenance to keep it in good condition.

Hardwoods

Merbau, jarrah, spotted gum and blackbutt, are extremely durable and will provide a next level feel of nature and opulence. Like the treated pine, you will want to oil your deck once or twice a year to keep it in its best condition for longer. Although it is pricier, they wear very well long term and are great for that natural timber feel below the foot around pools.

Composite Decking

Made of recycled wood fibres and plastics, this is a little more costly but comes with much less maintenance requirements so are perfect for busy families. It is an environmentally friendly option and comes in a variety of natural colours. It will note warp, face, splinter or rot and requires only to be washed clean as needed.

Once your deck is complete, be sure to furnish it with weather resistant pieces and take good care to keep it tidy to avoid attracting pests. For storage, consider installing box benches with hinged seats. If you have a raised deck, there might be enough room below to store tools, toys, or garden equipment. Make the most of your space and plan for other options or additions that will benefit you.
